Australia’s Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, is currently pushing for nationwide legislation to ban unvaccinated children from childcare and preschool facilities. The ban, called “No jab, No play”, has already been implemented in three Australian states.
The “No Jab, No play” ban would make childcare centers and preschools publicize a list of their vaccination rates so as to promote awareness amongst parents. It would also make parents who refuse to vaccinate their children ineligible for welfare and child care services. However, the ban would not affect unvaccinated children looking to receive primary education. The only children who can be exempted from the ban are those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons. Personal beliefs will not be accepted as excuses to decline to comply.
Various medical experts have weighed in on the proposed legislation, expressing their concern for children who might become at risk when coming in contact with an unvaccinated child. Michael Gannon, president of the Australian Medical Association, has stated that parents who decline to vaccinate their children are irresponsible to their communities.
The current vaccination percentage in Australia is 93 percent, two percent under the government’s goal percentage.
